Service Spotlight: Water for Sudan

Water for Sudan

When Mike Hurley, VP of Sales and Marketing, learned about Salva Dut and his work to bring water to the people of Sudan, he was inspired to share Salva's story with his Fibertech colleagues. But Salva's presentation at the company's summer 2009 meeting moved people in ways even Mike could never have imagined.

To prepare them for the event, all employees received copies of They Poured Fire on Us From the Sky, a book about Sudan's civil war that chronicles life as "Lost Boys of Sudan."

"We felt it important to educate everyone on the story, to help put into perspective the situation Salva and others faced when they were just young kids," says Dan Clifton, Director of Marketing. "I have two boys, and the plight of these children from Sudan hit home. I couldn't imagine my boys surviving that type of experience."

Salva showed the film "Just Add Water," spoke about his life and work, and answered questions. One of them was from Fibertech CEO and founder John Purcell: what can the company do to help?

So moved by the plight of Southern Sudan's people and Salva's entrepreneurial leadership, Purcell spontaneously pledged that the company would provide the support for Water for Sudan to drill a new well. Today, employees stay in touch with Water for Sudan's progress through a link and map on the Fibertech website.

"Salva touched a lot of people on so many levels," Clifton says. "People have stopped me in the hallway to comment on how he has touched their lives. From not taking things for granted, to saying things like 'He's inspired me to think I can do anything,' Salva's message still resonates long after his speech ended."

At Fibertech Networks, it's inspired us to connect the local with the global to make a difference.
